Scientific Equations

The calculators in this dashboard are powered by the following industry-standard correlations:

Gas Rate (Choke):

$$q_g = \frac{C \cdot A \cdot P_1 \cdot C_d}{\sqrt{T \cdot \gamma_g \cdot Z}}$$

Calculates flow through a restriction under critical (sonic) conditions.
Gas BHP (Static):

$$P_{ws} = P_{wh} \cdot e^{\left( \frac{0.01875 \cdot \gamma_g \cdot H}{Z \cdot T} \right)}$$

The Cullender and Smith simplified approach for static gas columns.

How to Use the Tools

  • Step 1: Input Field Data. Enter your gauge readings ($psig$ or $psia$), temperatures ($^\circ F$), and fluid properties ($ppg$ or $pcf$).
  • Step 2: Check Units. Use the Fluid Density Converter if your mud weight is in a different format than the calculator requires.
  • Step 3: Calculate & Verify. Click the primary action button. If calculating Choke Rates, compare the "Effective Choke" to your "Nominal Choke" to check for bean erosion.
  • Step 4: Report. All results are provided in standard oilfield units ($mscf/d$, $psia$, $cp$) for direct entry into your Daily Operations Report.
